The Power of Swolemates

Why working out with a friend gets you better results.

Swolemates: (Noun) Your life-long gym partner. The one you simply can’t lift without. You would never dare let someone else spot you once you’ve found your true swolemate. You and your swolemate grow together, both literally and figuratively. Age, ethnicity, gender, body type, political affiliation, and sexual preference have no bearing on social acceptance of two people calling themselves swolemates. That is: prejudice against swolemates is non-existent.

While it may be laughable at times or a super clichéd term in the gym circle, the power of a swolemate is in fact, true.

First and foremost, you will be more motivated! Meeting a friend at the gym and making it a social hour while also getting healthier will make it a much easier appointment to keep with yourself. Plus, when you make plans with someone, you are less likely to change them so you don’t inconvenience anyone therefore you stick to the workout plan! Which leads us to the next fact, accountability.

Second, Accountability: When you workout alone, you are more likely to skip that last rep, jump off the treadmill early, not push through that last hill…etc. But a friend or significant other will be the thing that encourages you to go those last five minutes or push out 3 more chest presses. They hold you accountable to going to the gym or getting out and running.

Third, competition. Even if they are your very best friend or husband, you know you want to try and lift just a little more than they did. Or you want push up one more weight. You want to do as many crunches, pushups, miles as they do. Don’t tell me you haven’t been on the treadmill at the gym and you are next to someone who is going about the same pace and you look over and they are at a 6 and you’re at a 5.5 on the tread, that you don’t slowly creep that number up. We like to push ourselves and a swolemate gives you that partner to push with!

Forth, a spot: When you want to push through a few more reps but that muscle is shaking, you have someone there to help you. Not only with encouragement and a high five at the end, but they can make sure the bar doesn’t drop on your head!

Last, support: When you do this with your best friend or partner, you have fun and you are living a healthy lifestyle together. You are more likely to choose activities and restaurants that fit your goals. You don’t have to fight the urge to not order that slice of pizza, when you both head to get salads. Or better yet, enjoying that ONE cheat meal together, it means you each get different things and share.

Swolemates = success, whether it is weight loss, muscle gain, or anywhere in between. Grab a friend, family member, significant other, husband or wife – and tackle it together.
